How Are Paladin Spell Slots Calculated?

Paladin spell slots are determined by two factors: the character’s level and the character’s Charisma modifier. The higher the level and the higher the Charisma modifier, the more spell slots the character has.

The number of spell slots a character has is also affected by whether the character has access to any bonus spells, such as from the Spellcasting feat or from the Bardic Music class feature. If a character has bonus spells, they can use those spell slots to prepare and cast spells of any level they can cast, regardless of their actual number of spell slots.

At 1st level, a paladin has 2 1st-level spell slots and a Charisma modifier of +1. This means that the paladin can prepare and cast two 1st-level spells per day.

If the paladin has any bonus spells, they can use those spell slots to prepare and cast spells of any level they can cast, up to the maximum number ofspells they can cast per day (which is still two).

At 2nd level, a paladin’s number of spell slots increases to 3, due to their increased level. However, their Charisma modifier remains at +1, so they cannot prepare or cast any more 1st-level spells than they could at 1st level.

If they have any bonus spells, they can use those spell slots to prepare and cast spells of any level up to the maximum number ofspells they can cast per day (which is still three).

3rd level is when things start to get interesting for paladins in terms of spellcasting. Their number of spell slots increases to 4 due to their increased level, but their Charisma modifier also increases to +2.

This means that they can now prepare and cast four 1st-level spells per day (in addition to any bonus spells they might have).

At 4th level, a paladin’s number of spell slots increases again, this time to 5. However, their Charisma modifier also increases again, this time to +3.

This means that they can now prepare and cast five 1st-level spells per day (in addition to any bonus spells they might have). They can also prepare and cast two 2nd-level spells per day (again, in addition to any bonus spells they might have).

5th level is when things really start opening up for paladins in terms of spellcasting ability. Their number of spell slots increases yet again, this time to 6. However, their Charisma modifier also increases yet again, this time to +4.

This means that they can now prepare and cast six 1st-level spells per day (in addition to any bonus spells they might have). They can also prepare and cast three 2nd-level spells per day (again, in addition to any bonus spells they might have).

6th level is when things really start opening up for paladins in terms of spellcasting ability. Their number of spell slots increases yet again, this time to 7. However, their Charisma modifier also increases yet again, this time.
