In order to counting cards in Blackjack, you need to know the basic strategy and how to play the game. The first step is to memorize the basic strategy, which will tell you when to hit, stand, double down, or split.

Once you have memorized the basic strategy, you can begin to count cards.

There are a few different ways to count cards, but the most common is the Hi-Lo count. To use this count, you will assign a value to each card as follows: 2-6 = +1, 7-9 = 0, 10-A = -1.

This means that when a 2 is dealt, you will add one to your running count. When a 10 is dealt, you will subtract one from your running count.

As the cards are dealt, you will keep a running tally of the count. When the count is positive (meaning there are more low cards remaining in the deck), it is an advantageous situation for the player as there is a greater chance of being dealt a natural blackjack (21).

When the count is negative (meaning there are more high cards remaining in the deck), it is an advantageous situation for the dealer as there is a greater chance of busting.

You can use this information to adjust your bet size accordingly – increasing your bet when the count is favourable and decreasing your bet when the count is unfavourable.

Card counting is not illegal; however, casinos frown upon it and will often ban players they suspect of counting cards. If you are caught counting cards, you may be asked to leave the casino and will not be allowed to return.
