In blackjack, the object of the game is to have a hand that totals closer to 21 than the dealer’s hand, without going over 21. If you go over 21, you “bust” and lose the hand.
The dealer also busts if his hand exceeds 21. If you and the dealer have the same total, it’s a “push” and nobody wins or loses.

Blackjack is usually played with six decks of cards, but sometimes only one deck is used. The basic rules are the same regardless of how many decks are in play.
Before each hand begins, you must place a bet in the betting area. You can bet any amount up to the table limit. Once all bets are made, the dealer will deal two cards to each player, including himself. The dealer will put one of his cards face up so that all players can see it.
This is called the “up” card. The other card (called the “hole” card) will be kept face down until all players have finished making their decisions.
After the initial deal, each player has a number of options:
Hit: Take another card from the dealer.
Stand: Take no more cards from the dealer. This is also sometimes called “staying” or “standing pat.”
Double down: Double your bet and take one more card from the dealer. This option is only available on the player’s first two cards (called a “hard hand” because there is no ace that can be used as 11).
Split: If your first two cards are of equal value, you may split them into two separate hands by placing another bet equal to your original bet.
You will then be dealt a second card for each hand. Some casinos also allow you to re-split if you are dealt another pair of equal value cards.
Surrender: Give up half your bet and end your turn.
Once all players have had their turn, it becomes the dealer’s turn to play his hand according to set rules:
The dealer must hit if his hand totals 16 or less and must stand if his hand totals 17 or more. In some casinos, dealers are also required to hit on a soft 17 (a hand containing an ace that totals 17).
If the player busts (goes over 21), he loses his bet even if the dealer also busts later in the same round. If both player and dealer have blackjack (a total of 21), it’s a push and nobody wins or loses.
