How Does the Betting Work in Blackjack?

In blackjack, players bet against the house (or casino) instead of against each other. Before any cards are dealt, each player places a bet in their respective betting boxes.

The dealer then deals two cards face up to each player and two cards face down to themselves.

The face up card is called the “up” card and the face down card is called the “hole” card. After all players have received their two cards, the dealer will check for a natural blackjack. A natural blackjack is when your first two cards equal 21.

This happens when you are dealt an ace and a ten-valued card (10, jack, queen, or king). If the dealer does not have a natural blackjack, then play begins.

The player to the dealers left is the first to act and must decide what action to take with their hand. The options are to “stand” (keep your two cards and take no more), “hit” (take another card to try and improve your hand), “double down” (double your bet and take one more card), “split” (if you have two of the same card you can split your hand into two separate hands), or “surrender” (give up half of your bet and end your hand).

Once all players have acted, the dealer will then reveal their hole card. If the dealer has a natural blackjack, all players lose except for those who also have a natural blackjack.

If the dealer does not have a natural blackjack, then they will hit or stand according to a set of rules that determine when dealers must hit and when they must stand.

Once the dealer has either busted or stood, then all remaining players who have not busted will win if their hand is higher than the dealers. Players with lower valued hands will lose their bets.

If both the player and dealer have similar hands, then it is a push or tie and no money changes hands.
