What Casino Did Resorts World Replace?

In 1978, Resorts World New York City (formerly known as Resorts World Casino New York City) opened its doors in Queens, making it the first and only casino in the five boroughs of New York City. The brainchild of Malaysian businessman Lim Goh Tong, the casino resort was built on the site of the former Aqueduct Racetrack.

It is operated by the Genting Group, one of the world’s largest gaming companies.

In 2019, Resorts World underwent a major expansion, adding a second hotel and a convention center to its Queens complex. The expansion added over 1,400 new jobs to the local economy.

Despite its size and success, Resorts World has not been immune to criticism. In 2017, the casino was fined $1 million by the state of New York for violating anti-money laundering regulations.

In 2020, the casino was sued by a group of former employees who accused it of racial discrimination.

Despite its challenges, Resorts World remains a popular destination for gambling and entertainment in New York City. For many visitors, it is the closest thing they will ever experience to Las Vegas in their own backyard.
