What Happened Ada Blackjack?

Ada Blackjack was born in 1898 in a small village in Siberia. She grew up living a traditional lifestyle, until she met and married a whaling captain named Blackjack.

The couple moved to Nome, Alaska, where Ada gave birth to their son, Stanley.

In 1921, Blackjack and Stanley joined an expedition to Wrangel Island, led by American explorer Vilhjalmur Stefansson. The group of men and women were stranded on the island for over two years, during which time Ada proved to be an invaluable member of the team.

She hunted and gathered food for the group, and even gave birth to a daughter while on the island.

When the group was finally rescued in 1923, Ada and her children returned to Nome. However, life was not easy for the family.

Blackjack’s husband had died during the expedition, leaving her to raise their two young children alone. She struggled to make ends meet, but eventually found work as a seamstress.

In 1925, Blackjack met and married another man, but this relationship also ended in tragedy. Her new husband died suddenly of pneumonia, leaving her a widow once again.

Despite the tragedies she faced, Ada Blackjack continued to live her life to the fullest. She remained active in her community and even took up sewing again later in life.

She died in 1983 at the age of 85.

Ada Blackjack was an amazing woman who overcame great adversity. Despite losing her husband and facing many challenges, she never gave up on life.

She was an inspiration to all who knew her and will always be remembered for her strength and determination.
