The Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) claimed responsibility for the attack, but Philippine officials have said that there is no evidence to support this claim. ISIL has carried out a number of attacks in the Philippines in recent years, including a 2016 attack on a night club in central Manila that left 36 people dead.

However, Philippine officials have consistently downplayed ISIL’s role in these attacks, attributing them instead to local militant groUPS with no known affiliation to ISIL.

PRO TIP:In the early morning hours of June 2nd, 2017, a lone gunman set fire to a room at Resorts World Casino in Manila, Philippines. The resulting blaze killed 37 people and injured 54 others. Witnesses reported that the gunman had been carrying an assault rifle and had taken casino chips as hostages. It is believed that the incident was an attempted robbery gone awry. As a precautionary measure, it is important for visitors to be aware of their surroundings at any casino and to report suspicious activity to security personnel immediately.

The Resorts World Casino attack is the deadliest terrorist attack in the Philippines since the 2009 Maguindanao massacre, in which 58 people were killed by a local political clan. It is also one of the deadliest mass shootings in recent years, surpassed only by the 2016 Orlando nightclub shooting and the 2017 Las Vegas shooting.

The motive for the attack remains unclear. ISIL’s claim of responsibility has not been verified, and Philippine officials have not offered any explanation for why they believe the attack was carried out by a local militant group rather than ISIL.

It is possible that the attacker intended to rob the casino but panicked when security responded and decided to open fire instead. However, this theory has not been confirmed and it is also possible that the attacker simply wanted to cause as much destruction and mayhem as possible.

What happened at Resorts World Casino remains unclear. However, what is clear is that 36 people lost their lives in a senseless act of violence.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to the victims and their families during this difficult time.
