What Happens When You Get a Blackjack in Blackjack?

When you play blackjack, getting a blackjack (a natural 21) is one of the best things that can happen. If you’re lucky enough to get a blackjack, the dealer will usually pay you 3-to-2 on your bet.

That means if you bet $10, you’ll win $15.

There are a few other things that can happen when you get a blackjack that are less desirable. The first is that the dealer may offer you “insurance.” If the dealer has an Ace showing, he or she will ask if you want to take insurance. Insurance is a side bet that pays 2-to-1 if the dealer has a blackjack.

PRO TIP:When you get a Blackjack (21) in Blackjack, you will generally receive a payout of 3:2 compared to the original bet. This is the best possible hand in Blackjack and it will result in an automatic win, unless the dealer also has a Blackjack.

It’s a bad bet for the player, because the odds of the dealer having a blackjack are only about 9%. Even if you have a blackjack yourself, taking insurance is a bad idea because you’re still likely to lose money on the deal.

The other thing that can happen is that the dealer may ask you to “split” your blackjack. This happens when you have two cards of the same value (like two 8s).

Splitting your blackjack means making two separate hands out of those two cards, and betting on each hand separately. It’s usually not a good idea to split your blackjack, unless you’re an experienced player who knows when it’s advantageous to do so.
