Blackjack, also known as twenty-one, is a comparing card game between usually several players and a dealer, where each player in turn competes against the dealer, but players do not play against each other. It is played with one or more decks of 52 cards, and is the most widely played casino banking game in the world.

Blackjack is a member of a large family of traditional card games, known as trick-taking games, which includes such as bridge and spades. The object of the game is to beat the dealer’s hand by either having a total 21 or higher, without going over (busting).

In blackjack, suits don’t matter. All that matters are the point values of the cards in your hand. The Ace can count as either 1 or 11 points, depending on what’s best for your hand.

All face cards (Jack, Queen and King) count as 10 points. The 2 through 10 are worth their face value.

When you’re dealt your initial two cards in blackjack, you have the option to “hit” (take another card), “stand” (keep your current total), “double down” (double your bet and take just one more card) or “split” (if you have two of the same card, you can make two separate hands out of them).

If you hit 21 (a blackjack), you automatically win unless the dealer also has a blackjack. If you bust (go over 21), you automatically lose, even if the dealer busts too.

If neither of you has a blackjack or busts, then whoever has the highest total between the player and the dealer wins.

The basic strategy for blackjack is pretty simple: If your hand is worth 11 points or less, always hit. If your hand is worth 12-16 points and the dealer’s up-card is worth seven points or more, always stand. And if your hand is worth 17 points or more and the dealer’s up-card is worth six points or less, always stand.

Of course, there are exceptions to these basic rules based on all sorts of different circumstances at the table. But if you can remember these simple rules, you’ll be well on your way to becoming a winning blackjack player.
