What Suit Is Highest in Poker?

A suit is one of the categories into which playing cards are divided. Each card has one of four suits: hearts, diamonds, clubs, or spades.

The suits have no intrinsic value, but in games such as poker where players must make the best hand possible out of a limited number of cards, the suits can be used to break ties between otherwise equal hands. In poker, the suit of the highest card is used to break ties between otherwise equal hands.

PRO TIP:The highest-ranking suit in poker is spades, followed by hearts, diamonds, and clubs. This is important when determining the winner of a hand – if two players have the same hand rank, the one with the highest-ranking suit will win.

For example, if two players have a flush (a hand consisting of five cards of the same suit), the player with the highest card in their flush wins. If both players have the same high card, the second highest card is used to break the tie, and so on.

In games where suits are not used to break ties, such as most blackjack variants, the suits have no value at all and are simply used to determine which player goes first.
