Which Poker Card Is Highest?

Poker is a game of chance with many different variations. The most popular form of poker is Texas Hold ‘Em, which is what we will focus on in this article. In Texas Hold ‘Em, each player is dealt two cards face down, called hole cards. There are then five community cards dealt face up in the middle of the table.

These are available for all players to use. The best five card hand wins the pot.

The first thing to know about poker hands is that the Ace is always high. So, Ace, King, Queen, Jack, 10 is the highest hand possible. The Lowest hand possible is 5, 4, 3, 2, Ace. However, there are also straight and flush hands possible. A straight is five cards in sequential order, such as 4, 5, 6, 7, 8. A flush is five cards of the same suit (hearts, clubs diamonds or spades), such as 10 clubs, Jack clubs, Queen clubs, King clubs and Ace clubs.

PRO TIP:The highest card in poker is the Ace, followed by King, Queen, Jack, 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3 and 2. The suits of the cards (spades, hearts, diamonds and clubs) don’t matter. In the event of a tie between two or more hands with the same high card (for example two players both have an Ace high hand), the winner is determined by the second highest card. If those are also equal then it goes to the third highest and so on.

Straights and flushes both beat any other hand except for a higher straight or flush. Three of a kind beats any hand except for a higher three of a kind or a straight or flush. Two pair beats any hand except for a higher two pair or a three of a kind or better. One pair beats any hand except for a higher one pair or two pair or three of a kind or better.

Now that we’ve gone over the basics of poker hands, let’s talk about which poker card is highest. If you have two hole cards and the highest card on the board is an Ace, then you have an Ace high hand. If you have two hole cards and the highest card on the board is a King, then you have a King high hand. If you have two hole cards and the highest card on the board is a Queen.

you get the idea. The same goes for straights and flushes – if the highest card in your hand is an Ace and there are no community cards higher than that (such as a King or Queen), then you have an Ace high straight or flush.

In conclusion, the highest poker card is always determined by looking at the highest card in your hand or on the board (in the case of community cards). So if you have an Ace high hand or better (such as a straight or flush), then you will always beat someone with a King high hand or lower.
