In the early morning hours of October 1, 2017, a mass shooting occurred at the Route 91 Harvest music festival on the Las Vegas Strip in Nevada. The gunman, 64-year-old Stephen Paddock of Mesquite, Nevada, opened fire on the crowd from the 32nd floor of the Mandalay Bay hotel, killing 58 people and wounding 422.

The incident began at approximately 10:05 pm PDT, when Paddock fired more than 50 shots from his suite on the 32nd floor of the Mandalay Bay hotel toward a crowd of 22,000 people attending the Route 91 Harvest music festival below. He shot at concertgoers for about 10 minutes, pausing briefly before firing again for another minute or so.

Paddock then stopped firing and retreated to his room, where he committed suicide before authorities arrived. A search of his room revealed he had 23 firearms, including semi-automatic rifles, with him at the time of the shooting.

His brother described him as a “wealthy gambler” who had “no religious affiliation”, “no political affiliation”, and “no history of mental illness”.

In the days following the shooting, authorities said they were struggling to understand Paddock’s motivation. Sheriff Joseph Lombardo said that Paddock had planned the attack “extensively” and utilized “a secret place in his home where he stockpiled his weapons”.

FBI agents said they had found no connection between Paddock and any international terrorist group, and Lombardo described Paddock as a “lone wolf”.
