The Osage Nation is a federally recognized American Indian tribe with a reservation in Oklahoma. The Osage people originally lived in the Ohio and Mississippi river valleys around 600 AD. They migrated west in the late 1600s and early 1700s due to pressure from the Iroquois Confederacy and other tribes. The Osage settled in present-day Missouri, Arkansas and Kansas by 1800.
In 1808, they ceded their lands in Missouri and Arkansas to the United States and moved to a reservation in present-day Oklahoma. The Osage Nation was Forced to move again in 1873 because of pressure from white settlers. The Osage Nation now has a reservation in Osage County, Oklahoma. The Osage people are enrolled in the federallyrecognized Osage Tribe of Oklahoma.

The Osage Tribe of Oklahoma is the federally recognized Native American tribe of the Osage people. The tribe is headquartered in Pawhuska, Oklahoma, USA.
They have a 13,000+ acre reservation in Osage County, Oklahoma; their tribal jurisdictional area covers parts of seven counties in northeastern Oklahoma. They have nearly 3200 enrolled members, with 2200 living on the reservation and about 1000 members living elsewhere.
The current chief of the Osage Tribe is John Dossett, who was elected in 2014. He is the first chief elected since 1934 when the tribe reverted to traditional leadership after having been governed by US appointed chiefs for four decades.
Chief Dossett has served as vice-president of the National Congress of American Indians (NCAI). He was also inducted into the prestigious National Organization of American Indians (NOIA) Hall of Fame for his work on behalf of Indian country and tribes across America.
The tribe operates its own housing authority and issues tribal vehicle tags. It owns two casinos, one near its headquarters in Pawhuska, and one west of Bartlesville, Oklahoma, which opened on January 8, 2020; both are called “Osage Casino”.
It also owns two smoke shops/gas stations; one is located on its reservation near Us Highway 60 west of Pawhuska, and one just outside tribal jurisdictional boundaries near Hominy, Oklahoma on State Highway 99. The tribe issues its own tribal membership card which allows members access to all tribal owned businesses including casinos, gas stations and cigarette shops; it also allows them to vote in tribal elections.
The primary economic engine for the tribe is its gaming enterprise which includes both casinos mentioned above. The casinos provide jobs for about 1/3rd of all employed Osage Tribal members making it one of the largest employers in Northeast Oklahoma outside of government jobs.
The revenue generated by gaming supports many essential governmental services including housing, public safety, senior citizen services and youth programs among others not normally funded by government sources. In addition to casinos, the tribe’s business portfolio includes agricultural operations, real estate holdings, manufacturing/construction companies and several service businesses including an auto dealership (Pawhuska Ford) and a funeral home (Osage Funeral Home).
