How Do You Calculate Spell Slots in D&D 5e?

In Dungeons & Dragons 5th edition, spell slots are a finite resource that represent a character’s ability to cast spells. The number of spell slots a character has is determined by their level in addition to their race and class.

A character gains additional spell slots as they level up in order to accommodate the new spells they have learned. The highest level of spell a character can cast is also determined by their level.

In order to calculate the number of spell slots per day, first look at the table below to determine the base number of slots. This base number is modified by the character’s race and class. .

Once you have determined the base number of spell slots, consult the table below to see how many bonus spell slots are gained at each level.

From here, you can calculate the total number of spell slots available to your character per day. For example, a 1st-level human sorcerer would have 2 base spell slots (modified by their Sorcery Points), plus 2 bonus spell slots for being 1st-level, for a total of 4 spell slots per day.
