How Does a Blackjack Dealer Deal?

A blackjack dealer deals cards to players at a blackjack table in a casino. Blackjack is a popular casino game in which the aim is to get as close to 21 as possible without going over. The dealer deals cards from a shuffled deck and players take turns making their bets and trying to beat the dealer.

If the player goes over 21, they ‘bust’ and lose their bet. If the dealer also busts, then the player wins their bet.

The dealer starts by dealing two cards face up to each player, including themselves. They then deal one more card face up to each player, followed by one more card face down.

This is known as the ‘hole’ card and the player can look at this but must not show it to anyone else.

Once all the cards have been dealt, the player to the dealers left starts. They can either ‘stand’ on their current total or ‘hit’ and take another card. If they hit and go over 21, they automatically lose and the dealer does not need to take any more cards. When all players have either gone bust or chosen to stand, the dealer reveals their hole card.

PRO TIP:A Blackjack dealer will deal cards in a clockwise direction, starting with the player to the left of the dealer. The dealer will continue to deal until everyone has two cards. After this, players can choose to Hit (take another card), Stand (keep their current hand), or Double Down (double their bet). Once all players have acted, the dealer will reveal their face down card and take hits until they reach a total of 17 or more. If the dealer busts, all remaining players win.

If they have 16 or less, they must hit again. If they have 17 or more, they must stand. The aim of blackjack is usually just to beat the dealer, not necessarily get 21.

If the player has not gone bust and has a higher total than the dealer, then they win their bet and are paid out at odds of 1: 1. If the player has blackjack (21 with their first two cards), then they are paid out at odds of 3: 2.

If the dealer has blackjack, then all players lose their bets except those that also have blackjack who are pushed (neither win nor lose their bet).

In summary, a blackjack dealer will deal two cards face up to each player at a blackjack table, followed by one more face up and one face down (the hole card). Once all players have had their turn, the dealer will reveal their hole card and either hit or stand depending on what they have.

The aim is usually just to beat the dealer – if you do this you will win your bet 1: 1 unless you have blackjack when you will be paid out at 3: 2 odds.
