How Many Spell Slots Wizard 5e?

A wizard’s spellcasting is both complicated and simple. It is complicated because a wizard has to maintain a spellbook and track what spells she has prepared, but it is simple because a wizard can prepare any spell she knows at any time.

A wizard has a number of spell slots that she can use to cast her spells. The number of spell slots a wizard has depends on her level.

A 1st-level wizard has 2 spell slots, while a 20th-level wizard has 10.

A wizard can prepare any spell she knows at any time, provided she has the appropriate spell slot available. For example, if a 1st-level wizard knows the cantrip light and the 1st-level spells burning hands and sleep, she can prepare any two of those three spells in her 2 available spell slots.

If she wants to prepare all three spells, she must use one of her slots to prepare light as a cantrip.

Once a wizard prepares a spell, it remains in that slot until she casts it or replaces it with another spell. A wizard can cast a prepared spell as long as she has the necessary components and enough mana.
