What Hand Beats What in Poker?

In poker, there are different hand rankings. The highest ranking hand is a royal flush, followed by a straight flush, then four of a kind, a full house, a flush, a straight, three of a kind, two pair, and one pair.

The Lowest ranking hand is no pair.

A royal flush is the highest possible hand in poker and is made up of the following cards: Ace, King, Queen, Jack and Ten all of the same suit. A straight flush is the second highest hand and is made up of five sequential cards all of the same suit. Four of a kind is the third highest hand and is made up of four cards of the same rank with any other card. A full house is the fourth highest hand and is made up of three cards of the same rank with two other cards making up a pair. A flush is the fifth highest hand and is made up of five non-sequential cards all of the same suit. A straight is the sixth highest hand and is made up of five sequential cards with at least two different suits.

Three of a kind is the seventh highest hand and is made up of three cards of the same rank with any other two cards. Two pair is the eighth highest hand and is made up of two different pairs with any other card. One pair is the ninth highest hand and is made up only of two cards of the same rank with any other three cards. The Lowest possible hand in poker without any pairs or better hands being present is known as high card which means that your best five card combination contains no pairs or better hands.

PRO TIP:In a game of poker, there are five different hand rankings, with the highest being a Royal Flush and the lowest being a High Card. A Royal Flush consists of 10, J, Q, K, and A of the same suit; while a High Card is when you don’t have any other rank or draw. The other three hands are Straight Flush (five cards in sequence of the same suit), Four of a Kind (four cards of equal rank), and Full House (three cards of one rank and two cards of another). The higher ranking hand always beats out the lower ranking hands, so if two players both have a pair, for example, whoever has the highest pair will win.

The following list shows what hands beat what in poker from strongest to weakest:

Royal Flush > Straight Flush > Four Of A Kind > Full House > Flush > Straight > Three Of A Kind > Two Pair > One Pair > High Card

A royal flush always beats a straight flush because it’s the highest possible hand in poker. A straight flush only beats four of a kind if there are no higher fours of a kind present such as in J-Q-K-A-2 or 10-J-Q-K-A. A four of a kind can only be beaten by another four of a kind with higher rank such as 5-5-5-5 beating 2-2-2-2 or J-J-J-J beating 10-10-10-10 since 4s are higher than 2s which are higher than 10s. A full house can only be beaten by another full house if it has a higher 3 card rank such as QQQ88 beating 99977 since queens are higher than nines which are higher than sevens. A flush can only be beaten by another flush if it has higher sequential rank such as J987 beating 8763 since jacks are higher than eights which are higher than sevens which are higher than sixes which are higher than threes. A straight can only be beaten by another straight if it has higher sequential rank such as QJ109 beating 87632 since queens are higher than eights which are higher than sevens which are higher than sixes which are higher than threes which are higher than twos. Three of a kind can only be beaten by another three if it has a higher 3 card rank such as KKK89 beating QQQ23 since kings are higher than queens which are higher than twos. Two pair can only be beaten by another two pair if it has both pairs with a higher 3 card rank such as 99888 beating 66655 since nines are higher than sixes which arehigher five fives) or (22233).

If both pairs have an equal 3 card rank then it goes to kickers with for example JJ887 beating JJ886 since eight eightsevens) . If both pairs and both kickers have an equal 3 card rank then it goes to suits for example KK999 vs KK888 ,the first one would win because its clubs>diamonds . One pair can only be beaten by another one pair if it has both pairs with equal 3 card ranksuch as 77888 losing to 88899 since nines arehigher eights). If both pairs have an equal 3 cardrank then it goes to kickers for example 77888 losing to 77899 ,the first one would win because its eights>sevens . High card means that noneof player’s present in their best 5card combination ,in this case we compare each individualcard from high to low until we find afirst difference ,for example :AT854 vs KQ932 ,the first one would win becausethe ace beats king . If 2 players have identicalhigh cards then we go to second highestand so on until we find adifference .
