The Seneca Niagara Casino is owned by the Seneca Nation of Indians. The Seneca Nation is a federally recognized Indian tribe with its headquarters in Western New York. The tribe is made up of two distinct groUPS, the Seneca and the Cayuga, who share a common language and culture. The tribe has a long history of occupation in what is now New York State. The first recorded contact between the Seneca and Europeans was in 1609 when the French explorer Champlain visited their village on the shores of Lake Ontario.

The Seneca were one of the Five Nations of the Iroquois Confederacy, also known as the Haudenosaunee. The Confederacy was a powerful alliance of Native American tribes that controlled a large territory in UPState New York. The Seneca were the westernmost of the Five Nations and their territory extended from present-day Buffalo west to the Genesee River and south to Allegheny Plateau. The Iroquois Confederacy was an important ally of the British during the American Revolutionary War. After the war, many Iroquois tribes were forced to cede their lands to the United States in treaties.
